I teach construction technology to future General contractors and Interior Designers...and this is the best reference book I have found for beginners. When they ask me the size of a door or height of a kitchen cabinet I tell them to look it up...and I have the utmost confidence that it is both in this book and so well illustrated that the students can easily understand it.I call this book the Beginners Graphic STandards. And at about 1/3 the cost. I also reccomend KaffeeKang' book called Graphic Guide to Frame Construction for residential framing.

This is a wonderful resource book for those builders who find themselves moving back and forth between residential and light commerical work.I found I was sometimes lost as I ventured deeper and deeper into commercialwork, but this book showed me the practial applications for materials andconstruction methods that were new to me.

This book is jam packed with almost everything you could need to know about construction. When I say that, I mean it covers all of the major components. It does not walk you through tiling a floor, but as an example it does show the different methods of framing and provide clear illustration of how each method is done.I only wanted information on residential construction, but this book covers commercial building as well. The drawings are excellent.I found it tough to put the book down and found myself re-reading several sections because of all the information contained in them.It will serve as an excellent reference guide for all of my future projects.I have already changed many of the details for my upcoming project as a result of this book.

I am a professor at Pratt Institute's School of Architecture. I teach a construction documents class for wood frame. This book is an invaluable resource and my students use it exclusively for a reference guide for theirproject. It is one of the best books I have come across for its value.

I was first given this book by the architect of a home I was building over20 years ago.The home involved curves and radiuses was built on a verysteep slope.Integration of dis-similar materials and proper flashing wascritical to it's performance. This book provided me with an understandingof how to tie many varied components together.Once completed, the homereceived international recognition (my first project to do so!).

I havepurchased and given at least 5 copies of this book to key employees sincethen.Recently I gave a copy to a law firm I frequently act as expertwitness for in commercial and residential construction litigation.Theillustrations are very understandable and compelling. This book (andothers by Ching) easily compliments any construction or designprofessional's library.

I am a carpenter and I have had this book for ten years. It has answeredmany practical questions encountered when a vague plan is the basis for thestructure. This would be a good book for every person in the world to own.

Every page of this book offers a detailed drawing of each basic construction method, design layout, and material properties you could think of.Its a very handy book to have in case you need a detail or doing your own renovations. Each method is described and labeled in an orderly format. The book also provides ADA layouts and tilt-up construction which makes the book up-to-date.This is a great reference book that will stand the test of time.

While I agree with others that this book is comprehensive in scope, and while it is beautifully illustrated, it is lacking in the details. Our Building Construction class used it as a primary text, and nowhere does it tell you basics. For example, the drawings have few if any dimensions, which are pretty critical to one's understanding of basic construction (e.g., studs spaced 16" on center). Like all of Ching's books, they at first appear chock full of helpful information, but more often than not, I find them beautifully illustrated and light on content.

This book By Francis Chingis short on text and long on illustrations. The large pages help show a clear picture in most instances. The illustrations are both the saving grace and bane of this work. When they are good they are really good,no better way to identify and pass along, various building techniques than to portray each in a sketch. The bad illustrations will cause you to twist and turn the book trying to make some sense of the picture. Illustrations like these need titles, such as "top view" , "side view " etc. Sometimes to save space I suppose, the author juxtaposed various views in irrational positions so a common viewpoint can not be figured upon. The lack of text makes these mystery illustrations all the more confusing.Aside from a few confusing pictures, the majority of the book is very informative. This book will be valued as a reference. It thoughly covers most subjects in a "Pros" and "Cons" type style, quickly cutting to the chase.

As an architect I worked for noted, this book gives you just enough information to make you dangerous.Ching provides a beautifully illustrated guide to basic concepts of building construction. It is a great introductory book filled with much useful information, but one can't necessarily build from this book.I use it mostly to explain construction ideas, especially when it comes to wood-frame buildings, than I do as a set of graphic standards.Ching does offer some specific information, such as thermal resistance of building materials and a general span guide for roof and floor trusses, but much of this information is general and should be verified with more precise data books. However, Ching didn't set out to create another "Standard Architectural Graphics" book, but rather an affordable guide to building construction which would provide some useful information to the design student and home builder alike.
